Things Your Wedding Photographer Wants You To Know
Choosing your wedding photographer will be about finding someone who you click with…
You are going to be hanging out with this person all day! You want to find someone who you get along with, who makes you feel comfortable and who you trust to capture your wedding day in the style that you are looking for. You also want to choose someone who is level headed, take charge and knows how to handle a crowd! The last thing you need is your photographer coming to you with all the problems, or freaking out because something didn’t go right.
…and about your budget!
Wedding photography is expensive! It is a luxury. That being said you need to find a photographer who is in your budget. Usually wedding photography is one of the top three things a bride spends the most of her wedding budget on. Make sure you know what you are going to receive such as products and prints so that you aren’t blindsided after your wedding with additional costs. Some photographers even offer payment plans leading up to your big day but it is an industry standard to pay in full before your wedding day.
You will want to schedule time for bridal portraits.
Your wedding day is going to fly by and you want to make sure your timeline has everything on it to ensure nothing is missed. Bridal portraits are one of those things that tends to get overlooked. Be sure to schedule it into your timeline and talk to your photographer before hand about the look you are going for with your portraits.
Wedding photographers aren’t mind readers! Tell us what you want or you might not get it.
Speaking of talking to your photographer – we are not mind readers! If there is a certain photo you want to see if you can duplicate, ask us. If there is a certain location at your venue you want to take photos at, let us know! We go to a lot of weddings and every single one of them is different. Do you have a family heirloom you are wearing as your something old or something borrowed? Tell us! We want to capture your special things and your special moments but we also won’t know anyone and we DO need a little direction. This is why it’s helpful to have all of your little details laid out before we arrive so we can capture those details while you’re still getting ready! And grabbing us during your reception for a photo with your college girlfriends is very helpful!
You might not get all the photos you originally wanted…
We are only human afterall. The day moves so quickly and even with a timeline, two photographers and our watchful eyes, things happen and we might miss them. It sucks. Communicating with your photographer will help alleviate some of this.
But you will LOVE the photos you do get and find a ton you never knew you wanted.
Even though there might be a few things you wish had been captured, you are going to love your photos! Wedding photographers work hard to capture the whole story of your wedding day – from the details to the dancing. You will even find some photos you are absolutely in love with but you never thought to ask for!
Your face will hurt from smiling.
This is really a thing! I never thought it was possible until I got married myself and at the end of the day my face hurt! But it’s all worth it so flash that smile for all you’re worth!
You’ll probably question what your photographer is doing in those bushes or why they are laying down on the ground…
Yes. As photographers we not only run around looking through bushes and laying down in the grass or dirt but you’ll probably see us climbing on anything and everything. Laugh at us and go about your business because chances are we are in the process of getting some amazing shots!
It takes a long time to get your photos back.
We take thousands of photos and it takes awhile for us to post process them. Be patient and know we want to deliver only the best quality to you. Generally speaking, wedding photos take anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months to get returned. Be sure to talk to your photographer ahead of time so you know what their turn around time is!
It takes even longer to put together a wedding album…
Many of my brides take almost a year to order their wedding album. Usually it doesn’t take that long but I do allow up to a year to make a decision. Wedding albums are some of the most high quality albums you’ll ever find much less order for yourself. This also means it is a large expense and purchasing something like that after your wedding is sometimes not in the cards. Take a few months to save up and really think about which photos you want in your album and then make your order! You’ll be glad you waited a little bit!
Your photos are the property of your photographer.
I give my brides the rights to print the photos on their own but it doesn’t give them the rights to the photos. This just means the photos are my property and we can use them for our blog, marketing, etc. Always talk to your photographer before hand if you are concerned with how your photos will be used. Always read the contract and be open and honest with your photographer if you do not want them to be shared on social media.
You will not get every single image taken on your wedding day...
Like I said, we take thousands of photos on your big day. You may be thinking, “Well then why can’t I have all of them?” or “What if I’m missing out on a great photo you just didn’t include?” These are all valid questions, however not all of the photos are going to be good quality! Some are test shots, many have people blinking or just are plain unflattering. It is our job as photographers to go through all the images and pick only the very best ones. We are professional curators and we do this for a living. We are doing all of the hard work for you! We choose only the best photos and only the photos we are proud to put our brand on.
…and you definitely will not get the RAW files either.
Most photographers will not let you have the RAW unedited files. It’s just not going to happen unless you find an amateur or someone who is doing you a favor and isn’t really in the wedding photography business. You don’t want all the RAW images anyways! Photographers spend a lot of time and energy editing and putting their personal style on the wedding photos so they all flow together. Getting the RAW files would be like having a family relative shoot your wedding – you just aren’t going to get the quality you expect and pay for. This is also why you hire a professional! You want only the best photos to remember your day by!
You WILL get an amazing snap shot of your day down to the little details.
At the end of the day you will get some amazing photos that capture your wedding day perfectly. If you hire someone within your budget, ask lots of questions and talk about expectations ahead of time you will not be disappointed!
