The Must Have Engagement Session
I call it the “Must Have Engagement Session” because you should NOT skip out on this important part of getting engaged! Many people think that oh, the proposal was captured so I have photos, I don’t need engagement photos – or they book an engagement session with a photographer that is different from their wedding photographer! None of these things are necessarily wrong but I cannot stress enough the importance of getting engagement photos done. Many photographers even include a session in their wedding pricing so really why not do them?? Here are some of my top reasons why you really MUST HAVE engagement photos done.
1. You get to know the photographers style. Every photographer out there has a different style. Every. Single. One. It’s very important when you’re choosing a wedding photographer that you choose one with a style you absolutely adore and who is consistent across all of their wedding photos. A great way to see if you and your fiance fit into a photographer’s style or not is by getting engagement photos done first with them! You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it right?? That’s essentially what engagement photos are (besides documenting the fact that you guys are now engaged of course!). Engagement photos are a great way to see if you love how they capture your, well, LOVE!
2. You get to know the photographer. Seems simple enough – I mean, why not just go out for a coffee date? (And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE coffee dates) But you also want to see how your photographer works behind the camera. Again, it’s like you’re test driving a car – seeing how it works, are you comfortable in it, do you like how it handles the unexpected, etc. You also want to get a feel of how your photographer handles a photo shoot. Are they good at making you feel comfortable in front of the camera? Do they help you pose? Do they make you laugh? Do you even like each other? All of these things are important because your wedding photographer is going to be with you on one of the most important days of your life! We are there on your wedding day when the stress threatens you, when the timeline is delayed or when it starts to rain. You want someone you trust and who you know can handle things. How will you know this if you didn’t have a session with them before your big day?? It’s also so much easier to loosen up and enjoy yourself in front of the camera when your photographer has already showed you how they work before hand.
3. You can see what poses you love and what ones you don’t love. Photographers use many poses but some poses do not work for some couples and wouldn’t you like to find out which ones work for you and which ones don’t before your wedding day? When you get the photos back you can see which poses you loved of you and your fiance and which ones you want to skip on your wedding day. Your photographer also gets a feel for which poses you guys look most natural in and how you guys operate in front of the camera. Pstttt…I’ll tell you a secret – we’re test driving you too!! As a photographer we want to see what loosens you guys up in front of the camera, what makes you guys laugh and how can we tailor our services to make sure you get the most out of your session AND your wedding.
4. Your engagement session is going to be more relaxed than your wedding portrait session. Your wedding day is packed full and it goes by FAST. Sometimes the only time we’ll have for your bride and groom portraits is ten or fifteen minutes. This isn’t a bad thing! It’s going to be an amazing day. But your engagement session is meant to be more relaxed. You have between 60-90 minutes of time where you get to relax and cuddle up with your fiance. As your photographer, I get to relax and have fun with you both as well. We’ll walk around, chat, laugh a lot and just have a great time while getting some amazing photos. These photos will be so special – just as special as your wedding photos and these photos are important because unlike on your wedding day where you’ll be in a wedding dress, your engagement photos are a time to really showcase your individual personalities and really showcase your relationship. You can’t “redo” your wedding photos so that’s why an engagement session is so important – it’s practice so that you don’t need a lot of time on your wedding day to achieve great photos – your photographer will already know you both and you will already be comfortable in front of the camera!
